Wan Ling Yang, the Photographer
The value of art is found in its ability to communicate a particular spirit and convey the emotions of the artist to others. Composing a photograph is like painting a picture, both shutter and brush strokes may be rapid or slow. Photography and painting have many points in common. Images in the real world can change in the twinkling of an eye and thus they are extremely difficult to capture on either film or paper. However, the ability to give form to spirit and shape things with exquisite detail are characteristic traits of only the very best artists. Such artists are worthy of great admiration and respect.
Mr. William L. Yang was born in Szechwan, China. As a young boy during the China-Japanese War, he traveled with his parents throughout Southern and Western China, the northern region of Vietnam, and the provinces of Kwangtung, Kweichow, Yunnan, Kwangsi, and Szechwan. From an early age, Mr. Yang developed a deep appreciation for art and a passion for painting.
In 1949, Mr. Yang moved to Hong Kong, and at the age of 13, began exploring photography. His talents flourished under the guidance of distinguished teachers and artists, and he cultivated connections within prominent cultural circles. These influences greatly refined his character and accelerated his artistic development. After graduating from high school, he pursued physics studies at Cheng Kung University in Taiwan, where his photographic skills became widely recognized within the campus community.
Mr. Yang immigrated to the United States and continued his higher education at the University of Texas, where his paintings and photographs were frequently exhibited in university halls and libraries. These exhibitions received critical acclaim and were featured in numerous local news articles. During this time, he also served as an assistant instructor in mechanical drawing. Following his graduation, he pursued an advanced degree in mathematics at the Virginia Scientific Institute while simultaneously working as a contractor for NASA on the Apollo Moon Program. His exceptional artistic skills greatly enhanced his work in producing detailed pictorial mechanical drawings and blueprints, all while he continued to refine his photographic expertise. He owned a 200-plus acre farm in Virginia providing a natural and tranquil setting, with the peaceful mountain before his farmhouse deeply influencing the content and style of his photographs.
After his parents immigrated to the United States, Mr. Yang moved his family to Philadelphia, which became their permanent home. In 1995, he became the founding president of the Philadelphia Central Photographic Association, dedicating countless hours to the growth and activities of the camera club. While managing his own business in Philadelphia, he also traveled extensively. Over the past two decades, Mr. Yang has journeyed across the United States, visiting countless cities, landmarks, mountains, and rivers. His travels have also taken him to more than 108 countries across all seven continents, where he has captured hundreds of thousands of scenic photographs depicting nature, landscapes, people, birds, animals, plants, and flowers.
Mr. Yang is also the founder of the Asian Music and Dance Association. In the future he plans to continuously travel around the world and devote his time and talents to photography, music, dance sports, culture and organizational support.
